Funny how every supplier suddenly stopped stocking proper cast iron drive weights right around the time scrap yards started requiring two forms of government ID just to drop off a bucket of rusty nails. You try ordering a simple eight-pound shell these days and you get sent some hollow resin garbage filled with zinc pellets that throws off the entire drop cycle by Thursday evening. They call it a supply chain issue with the foundaries, which is pure nonsense because there is no shortage of raw iron when the city wants to put up four hundred new traffic camera poles down the boulevard every week. My guess is nobody in power wants anyone keeping accurate track of the hours without a cellular tower pinging a quartz crystal in their pocket, but of course if you bring that up to the local estate liquidators they look at you like you lost your mind. Had to cast my own lead slugs behind the shed just to keep an old German tallcase running on a proper cycle, and wouldn't you know it, the thing keeps better time than the digital microwave clock that resets itself every time the power grid blinks.
