I have been running a miniature weeping fig in a simple bubbler setup on my desk for about seven months now, and while the root development is fine, the relentless white calcification creeping up the collar of the stem is slowly turning what was supposed to be a calming Zen centerpiece into something resembling a stale frosted donut. I know the standard advice is to just haul gallons of distilled water up two flights of stairs every weekend like a medieval water bearer, but my tap water is practically liquid limestone and I refuse to respect it. Scrubbing it off with a vinegar-soaked Q-tip every Tuesday works for about twelve hours before the crust reasserts dominance. At this point the mineral buildup is doing more structural work holding the trunk upright than the actual net cup, so I guess I am just committed to growing a half-tree half-stalagmite hybrid until the whole glass jar eventually petrifies solid.
