So I decided to hook up this ancient 14 inch IBM monitor from my basement to my main rig using a cheap displayport to vga adapter and CRU. My goal was getting 1080p at 75hz because I figure higher numbers are always better for gaming, right? After playing around with the front porch and back porch timing numbers in custom resolution utility for like three hours, the screen finally blinked on! Everything looks super tiny and kind of fuzzy, plus there is this high pitched whining sound coming from the back of the tube, but the smoothness is just incredible. My colors shifted slightly toward a bright magenta tint and I cannot figure out which knob on the back fixes that part, though it makes cyberpunk look surprisingly futuristic so I am not even mad. Is the buzzing normal when pushing the horizontal scan rate past eighty kilohertz or should I be turnig down the pixel clock a bit before my desk catches fire? Either way I feel like this old hardware still has so much hidden potential waiting to be unlocked with enough patience and optimism!
