I converted my entire garage diagnostic station to pure text mode three years ago, and I have never looked back. The decision was born out of sheer necessity after a backfire from an improperly timed Holley carburetor ignited a pool of brake cleaner, effectively liquefying the LCD monitor I was using to read OBD-I data. While waiting for the fire extinguisher powder to settle, I wired up an old VT100 terminal I retrieved from a local scrapyard. There is something profoundly reliable about raw ASCII characters when you are knee-deep in transmission fluid. If an error code cannot be displayed in standard 7-bit ASCII, I simply do not care to diagnose it.
