i spent six hours today debugging a wrapper for a legacy auth module that someone decided was industry standard. turns out the documentation was written by a guy who hasnt seen sunlight since 2004. the salt is just a hardcoded string in a config file that nobody has permission to change. we are all just pretending this is secure while the prod server runs on hope and caffeine. maybe ill go back to writing assembly on a toaster.
